I have a Vietnamese A1 Driving License (DL). Can I ride a motorbike over 125cc?
If your A1 license was issued before January 1, 2025, you can still ride motorbikes up to 175cc without taking any additional test.
If your A1 license is issued after January 1, 2025, it will only permit you to drive motorbikes up to 125cc. To ride above 125cc, you’ll need to obtain an A2 license or rent a 125cc motorbike.
I drive a 50cc motorbike. Do I need a driving license?
Currently, no license is required for motorbikes under 50cc. However, under the upcoming Decree 151/2024/ND-CP, passing a driving test may soon become mandatory, including for expatriates. Updates are still pending.
I drive an electric bike. What does the new law say?
For electric motorbikes:
No license is required if the e-scooter has a power output of 4kW or less and a speed limit of 50 km/h (e.g., VinFast Klara S V1).
A Vietnamese A1 Driving License is required for electric bikes under 11 kW.
An A2 license is required for electric bikes over 11 kW.
I have an international motorbike license. Will the new regulations affect me?
Starting from January 1, 2025, when renting a motorbike in Vietnam, you must comply with the terms specified on your International Driving License. If your license includes an A1 category, you are permitted to ride motorbikes up to 125cc. If you hold an A2 category, you are allowed to operate any motorbike model.
Can I drive in Vietnam if I have an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
Foreigners can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Vietnam only if it is issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention (which includes 85 countries), as this is the only version recognized by Vietnamese authorities. The IDP is valid only when accompanied by the original national driving license.
Can I convert my Vietnamese license to an IDP?
Yes, you can convert your Vietnamese driving license to an International Driving Permit (IDP) if you meet the required conditions. You must have a valid Vietnamese driver’s license made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The IDP will be valid for up to 3 years, but it cannot exceed the expiration date of your Vietnamese driver’s license or your legal residence period in Vietnam.
Can expatriates buy a vehicle in Vietnam?
Yes, expatriates can buy a vehicle in Vietnam. However, depending on the type of vehicle and individual circumstances, there may be additional requirements. For example, commercial vehicles or imported cars may have specific regulations and documentation needs. It’s advisable to consult local authorities or the Department of Transport to ensure you meet all necessary requirements.
