FAQ on Deposit Savings in Vietnam

If you are a Vietnamese citizen living abroad for more than 12 months, you are not classified as a Vietnamese resident under Vietnamese law.

According to Circular 48/2018/TT-NHNN and the 2013 Ordinance on Foreign Exchange, only Vietnamese residentsare eligible to open foreign-currency savings accounts. However, you can still open a Vietnam-dong savings accountand authorize a family member to manage interest withdrawals on your behalf.

Under current regulations (Circular 48/2018/TT-NHNN by the State Bank of Vietnam), savings deposit accounts are reserved for Vietnamese citizens. This means traditional savings books or term deposit products are not typically available to foreign individuals.

However, expats can still access a range of other financial services—including personal and business bank accounts, current accounts, and foreign currency deposit options. Many banks also offer investment-linked and flexible deposit products tailored to non-residents.

It’s best to consult directly with your preferred bank or a local advisor to explore the most suitable solutions for your financial goals in Vietnam.

A savings book/card confirms your deposit ownership at a Vietnamese bank. Be sure it includes:

  • Bank name, seal, teller, and legal rep’s signature

  • Your full name, ID number, and issue date

  • Deposit details: card number, amount, currency, deposit date, term, interest rate, and maturity date

  • Access methods and procedures for lost or damaged cards

Always review your savings book carefully to avoid errors or confusion.

  • Visit a credit institution in person – Most savings deposits must be made directly at the bank unless you’ve registered for internet banking.

  • Bring personal ID – You’ll need valid identification. For joint deposits, all depositors must provide their documents.

  • Using a representative? – They must show a legal authorization document and ID.

  • Receive deposit certificate – After completion, the bank will issue a savings certificate to you or your representative.

  • Interest withdrawals – You may authorize a trusted person (e.g., a parent) to withdraw interest or part of the deposit.
