  • If your A1 license is issued after January 1, 2025, it will only permit you to drive motorbikes up to 125cc. To ride above 125cc, you’ll need to obtain an A2 license or rent a 125cc motorbike.

Currently, no license is required for motorbikes under 50cc. However, under the upcoming Decree 151/2024/ND-CP, passing a driving test may soon become mandatory, including for expatriates. Updates are still pending.

  • A Vietnamese A1 Driving License is required for electric bikes under 11 kW.

  • An A2 license is required for electric bikes over 11 kW.

Starting from January 1, 2025, when renting a motorbike in Vietnam, you must comply with the terms specified on your International Driving License. Foreigners can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Vietnam only if it is issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention (which includes 85 countries), as this is the only version recognized by Vietnamese authorities. The IDP is valid only when accompanied by the original national driving license.
