Do I need motorbike or car insurance in Vietnam?
Yes, both motorbike and car insurance are mandatory in Vietnam. Driving any motorized vehicle without insurance is illegal, even if you have a valid driver’s license. Vietnamese law requires that all vehicles, including those driven by foreigners, be covered by civil liability insurance to protect you financially in case of an accident where you are at fault.
How much does car insurance cost in Vietnam?
Compulsory car insurance in Vietnam costs about VND 480,000 per year (around US$20). This coverage provides up to VND 100,000,000 (approximately US$4,300) per case for injury or damage. Motorbike insurance is cheaper, around VND 66,000 (about US$3) per year.
What types of motorbike insurance are available in Vietnam?
Currently, there are three main types of motorbike insurance:
Compulsory Civil Liability Insurance for Motor Vehicle Owners:
This is mandatory by law, and vehicle owners must participate in this insurance when operating a vehicle in Vietnam.Insurance for Passengers on Motor Vehicles:
This type of insurance applies to passengers on the vehicle. The premium usually ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 VND.Physical Damage Insurance for Motor Vehicles:
This insurance applies to vehicles such as cars, trucks, and buses. It provides compensation for damage caused by accidents, fires, or other physical damage.
How much is the compulsory motorbike insurance premium?
The premium for compulsory motorbike insurance is specifically regulated as follows:
Two-wheeled motorcycles: From 55,000 to 60,000 VND
Three-wheeled motorcycles and mopeds: 290,000 VND
These rates are stipulated in Appendix 5 attached to Circular No. 22/2016/TT-BTC.
